INTRODUCTION :

Collaborative learning is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves  groups of students working together to solve a problem or to complete a task  or create a product.  According to Gerlach,  "Collaborative learning is based on the idea that learning is a naturally social act in which the participants talk among  themselves .  It is through the talk that learning occurs."

AIMS OF COLLABORATIVE LEARNING :

  1. To provide students deep understanding of subject they are studying.
  2. To enhance thinking of the students.
  3. To help student work in group.

Importance of collaborative learning :

  •  It promotes team work spirit.
  • It helps shy student come out of their shell.
  • It  promotes learning of a child.
  • Ensures attention through active student participation.

There are 2 types of collaborative learning :

  • Learning stations.
  • Jigsaw.

 Learning stations :

A learning station is a centre where students have activities to gain mandatory or voluntary skills. In this centre, students try to reach objectives through predetermined activities based on their levels. Although the goals of learning stations are similar, the specific content and the number and the types of activity settings differ depending on the grade level and the subject matter.  Students can move around independently or as small groups. It can occur in the classroom or in a location outside with resources related to the academic tasks. Directions are posted at learning stations where students can work on tasks at their own pace or during a set time. Activities may operate independently of the teacher or teachers may position themselves at one learning station for more direct instruction.

Conclusion :

Learning station is a way through which thoughts and views of student can be shared to each other. It is applicable as education is a child centered education where student’s participation is must. Students enjoyed doing it .they came to know each other with their strengths .They learned collaboration with cooperation in learning .
